How to keep your skin & hair healthy in the sun

With summer round the corner and the warm weather already making an appearance, it definitely puts you in a good mood no matter what’s going on in the world.

A summer glow makes you feel amazing after months of winter rain. But too much sun can have a negative affect on your skin and hair in the long run. That’s why I’ve written this blog post with a few tips on how to get that glow without permanent damage.

  1. Skin

Skin is one of the first things I notice when I meet someone. For many people, good skin is a constant investment with a big price tag. Acne, uneven skin tone, eye bags, dry skin, oily skin, wrinkles (eeek!) are all a possibility for us women, and things only get worse as we get older.

The main secret to a clear complexion is drinking lots of water, especially in summer. I aim to drink at least 2 litres a day, and if I’m working out or the weather is warmer I might try even to reach 3 litres! For acne sufferers water is the best thing out there to try and get rid of spots.

Despite what people think, the sun actually doesn’t dry skin out. Too much sun exposure causes the skin to over produce oil and can result in breakouts!

Health professionals recommend a maximum of 20 minutes of direct sun per day. I know, that doesn’t seem like much if you’re aiming for a deep golden tan. If you are a sun worshiper, there are ways to protect your skin without having to head for the shade.

Suncream, suncream, suncream. My best friend. I don’t necessarily wear suncream just for the protection from the sun in case I burn; but for the SPF. It's literally THE BEST thing you can use as it’s packed with anti ageing properties. That’s why I even wear suncream in winter.

Too much sun can cause premature ageing and suncream is the biggest defence against this. So next time you go to sit out in the sunshine (even in the UK), reach for the SPF and your skin will thank you.

2) Hair

For many girls, their hair is the trophy piece. If you look after your hair, you know how important it is to keep it in good condition all year round.

Holidays can put a massive strain on your hair, especially if it’s not the strongest to begin with. The sun, pool water with excessive amounts of chlorine and washing it more often all have a negative impact.

A really easy way to shield your hair from the sun is to wear a cap or a sun hat. You’ll be killing two birds with one stone as it protects your face too.

Another saviour for holiday hair is a good quality hair mask. The sun and chlorine dry the hair out, so a treatment a couple of times a week can replenish moisture and shine. Check out our Coconut Oil Hair Mask to see the multiple benefits of coconut oil for hair.

Finally, try not to wash your hair too often. I know this proves difficult if you’re in and out of the pool all day. However, washing your hair less allows your hair to build up its natural oils, washing it every day is stripping them away causing dry and brittle strands.
